Clinical definition (Orphanet)
A rare genetic neurological disorder characterized by or childhood onset of recurrent acute encephalopathic episodes with cerebellar and extrapyramidal involvement following febrile illnesses. During the episodes, patients typically show sudden onset of truncal , occasionally accompanied by lethargy and impairment of speech, as well as choreic and athetoid movements, , loss of deep tendon reflexes, and presence of pathological reflexes. Episodes last from day to weeks and may leave residual symptoms such as speech impairment and poor coordination. There have been no further descriptions in the literature since 1983.
How rare: <1 / 1 000 000 — fewer than one in a million. In a city the size of Kolkata, that might mean on the order of fifteen people.

Where to find support
Condition-specific patient organisations, when Orphanet lists them, are on the disease’s Orphanet page. We also link umbrella groups that support undiagnosed and ultra-rare families.

India — NPRD
Last verified 2026-07-26This ORPHAcode is not on our curated NPRD list (direct or Mondo-parent match). That does not decide clinical eligibility; families in India should ask a notified Centre of Excellence about current coverage.
Hand-curated for this project. ORPHAcode mappings are best-effort and may be incomplete or imprecise for umbrella categories. Parent (Mondo) matches mean the policy lists a broader category — confirm eligibility with a Centre of Excellence. Financial entitlements summarised from public policy statements and may change.
